The gripping sequel to the Locus award winning science fiction adventure, Revenger, tells a story of obsession and betrayal as two sisters hunt for the greatest treasure in the universe.
Adrana and Fura Ness have finally been reunited, but both have changed beyond recognition. Once desperate for adventure, now Adrana is haunted by her enslavement on the feared pirate Bosa Sennen's ship. And rumors of Bosa Sennen's hidden cache of treasure have ensnared her sister, Fura, into single-minded obsession.
Neither is safe; because the galaxy wants Bosa Sennen dead and they don't care if she's already been killed. They'll happily take whoever is flying her ship.
Shadow Captain is a desperate story of cursed ships, vengeful corporations, and alien artifacts, of daring escapes and wealth beyond imagining . . . and of betrayal.

More a continuation of 2016’s Revenger than a sequel, this wonderfully complicated, fascinating space opera carries on the adventures of teen sisters Adrana and Arafura Ness, who find themselves over their heads in deep space intrigue. In the earlier novel, Fura rescued the older Adrana from vicious space pirate Bosa Sennen, but not before Adrana had absorbed some of Bosa’s personality and Fura had been forced to become frighteningly ruthless. Now in command of Bosa’s feared spaceship, they are pursued by bounty hunters who won’t believe that they are innocent. After reaching the remote space station Wheel Strizzardy, they fall into the hands of crime boss Mr. Glimmery. Meanwhile, Fura has become obsessed with locating Bosa’s stash of loot, while Adrana wants to explore a remote object that she believes is somehow responsible for the fall of interstellar civilizations. Reynolds has constructed a huge, dazzling setting for this series, but even more interesting is watching the young Ness women interact with their somewhat untrustworthy crew and their own sometimes treacherous impulses. This marvelous mix of character study and space adventure isn’t always accessible to new readers but will delight returning fans.

In this second installment, Clare Corbett reprises her dynamic narration of the Revenger series opener. Sisters Adrana and Fura Ness struggle to reconcile who they've become in the aftermath of their ordeal with the notorious criminal Bosa Sennen. Alongside a hardy and well-characterized crew, they chart a course through hostile intergalactic space toward redemption and ill-gotten legendary treasure. Corbett narrates their voyage from Adrana's point of view, heightening the young woman's suspicion of her sister's increasingly unreliable and secretive behavior. Forced to seek supplies on an outlier planet, they soon tangle with Mister Glimmery, a crooked world leader with an unsettling vocal timbre. The sequel leaves listeners in suspense as chaotic events drag the spacefarers deeper into the unknown. J.R.T. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine
