Library Journal
April 23, 2021
Journalist and author Long (London's 100 Strangest Places) writes that the public's obsession with crime and punishment has not much changed in the past few centuries; whereas people once entertained themselves by watching executions, today they get their fix through Law and Order or CSI. Blending that fascination for crime with his passion for London, he offers a concise account of the city's most notorious murderers, from Jack the Ripper to the Kray twins. Spanning 1811 to 2006, the work offers a synopsis of each crime and explores the investigation, suspects, victims, and outcome. Organized geographically ("The West End," "Bloomsbury to Covent Gardens," "West London"), with detailed descriptions of the locations, this anthology has the style of a tour guide, similar to Long's other titles, such as Bizarre London. VERDICT True crime fanatics are not likely to discover much new here; however, the compelling subject matter will attract readers. A general purchase for large true crime collections.--Mattie Cook, Flat River Community Lib., MI
